The Land Cruiser has made its much-anticipated return, with the base model of the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 1958 reflecting a revival of the rugged and utilitarian characteristics that defined earlier Land Cruiser editions. One of the most significant updates is its reduced size and a more accessible price point, which positions the Land Cruiser as a competitor against other off-road vehicles like the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler.
The 2024 Land Cruiser is offered in three different trims: 1958, Land Cruiser, and First Edition. The Land Cruiser 1958, notably priced lower than its predecessor, attracts a broader range of customers, particularly those enthusiasts who prioritize off-road functionality over luxury features.
With its compact dimensions and classic, boxy shape, accented by nostalgic Toyota design elements, the new model pays homage to the SUV’s heritage while presenting a modern twist on a beloved style. Equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine, the Land Cruiser modernizes its performance while surpassing the older V8 model in terms of power and fuel efficiency. It produces 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. While the specifications boast an estimated fuel economy of 22 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg combined, our real-world testing reflected an average of 18 mpg. Nevertheless, it offers robust torque, making it capable on both urban roads and challenging terrains.
Although the hybrid system provides considerable power, it comes with a surprisingly noisy engine and a somewhat jarring shift between electric and gasoline power. However, on the road, the Land Cruiser exhibits more refinement compared to the Bronco and Wrangler models.
Where the Land Cruiser excels is in off-road capabilities. With features such as a locking center differential, a crawl-control system, hill-descent control, and standard four-wheel drive, it confidently navigates a variety of terrains. On-road handling has also seen improvements, thanks to enhanced suspension and steering that mitigate the nosedive issues of previous iterations, resulting in a smoother and more stable ride.
The interior offers a thoughtful balance between functionality and robustness. Designed with minimalism in mind, the cabin comes equipped with essential features but lacks some modern amenities such as ventilated seats, leather upholstery, and an advanced infotainment system. The cloth seats reflect the adventurous spirit aligned with the Land Cruiser’s rugged image. However, the quality of materials in this base trim may not meet the expectations typically associated with vehicles in this price range. Additionally, the absence of a third-row seat and a powered rear hatch might disappoint those looking for family-friendly features.
For those desiring a more upscale interior, upgrading to the standard Land Cruiser trim would provide leather seating, higher-end materials, and enhanced technological features.
The starting price for the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is $57,445, making it a more attractive option compared to its predecessor.
The Land Cruiser 1958 emerges as an enticing choice for adventurers and purists who prioritize off-road prowess and a nostalgic aesthetic.
