The 2017 McLaren 720S represented a significant milestone in the company’s transition from a leading force in Formula 1 to premier supercar manufacturer. With its aerodynamic and stylish design, it boasted a new carbon-fiber chassis that featured dihedral doors and cutting-edge active suspension technology borrowed from the 650S model.
At its core was the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 M840T engine, producing 710bhp. This powertrain allowed the vehicle to sprint from 0 to 62mph in merely 2.9 seconds, achieving a peak speed of 212mph. In 2018, McLaren introduced the GT3, a racing variant with 90% of its components redesigned from its road-legal counterpart to meet competitive criteria.
By 2020, the GT3X was introduced as a track-exclusive variant aimed at high-performance enthusiasts. Constructed with a bare carbon chassis, it was developed entirely by McLaren’s motorsport division, making it the only model in the lineup to be built through such a specialized process.
The McLaren 720S GT3X is outfitted with what the GT3 models offer in terms of aerodynamics and cooling systems. It features a refined version of the M840T engine that produces over 700bhp. Additionally, it boasts an extra 29.5bhp available through a push-to-pass function. The GT3X showcased its remarkable performance by achieving the fastest hill climb time at the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
