McLaren Automotive has officially revealed the next stage in the remarkable saga of its iconic ‘1’ car lineage that began with the illustrious McLaren F1 in the 1990s. This model is often hailed as the epitome of a supercar, a status reflected in its value of over $20 million today. The McLaren F1 boasts a top speed of 240 mph (386 km/h), a record for naturally aspirated vehicles that remained unbroken for decades, only later surpassed by turbocharged rivals.
Currently, only 100 units of the McLaren F1 are known to exist. Despite being nearly 30 years old, this classic vehicle commands a value exceeding $20 million, which applies to the standard McLaren F1 variant; the LM version, which is even scarcer, is therefore valued even higher. The design philosophy behind the McLaren F1 led to the development of the subsequent McLaren supercar, the P1. Launched in 2013, the P1 is another automotive icon, featuring hybrid technology and competing directly with the Porsche 918 and Ferrari LaFerrari. These three supercars collectively earned the title of the Holy Trinity of hypercars.
The McLaren F1 debuted with a 6-liter V12 engine that produced 618 horsepower in 1993, while the 2013 McLaren P1 utilized a combination of a 3.8-liter V8 engine and a 132 kW electric motor to achieve a total power output of 903 horsepower. McLaren manufactured only 375 units of the P1, resulting in its value being lower compared to the older F1 model. Currently, the asking price for a McLaren P1 ranges from $1.6 million to $2.4 million. As of now, McLaren is gearing up for the next installment of their supercar lineup, the McLaren W1, which is scheduled to be unveiled at 08:00 ET/05:00 PT on Sunday, October 6, 2024.
The W1 designation commemorates McLaren’s competitive spirit in the World Championship, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the team’s first success in the Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship, as well as Emerson Fittipaldi’s triumph in the 1974 World Drivers’ Championship with McLaren.
