When it was introduced in 1990, the ZR-1 represented the most ambitious Corvette ever produced. In contrast to earlier high-performance Corvettes that offered upgraded engine options, the ZR-1 was a complete model on its own, showcasing Corvette’s first and only overhead cam engine, designed in partnership with Lotus Cars from England.
The ZR-1 was powered by a remarkable all-aluminum V8 engine featuring 32 valves and quad overhead cams, producing a striking 375 horsepower and 370 pound-feet of torque. This exceptional engine enabled the ZR-1 to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just over four seconds and achieve a maximum speed of 175 mph.
Revealed at the 1989 Geneva Auto Show, the ZR-1 quickly gained attention, becoming a highlight in automotive media and appearing on nearly every major car magazine cover. With a starting price of approximately $62,675—around $30,000 more than the typical Corvette coupe—the ZR-1 set new standards for pricing in GM passenger cars. It was produced for five years before ceasing manufacturing in 1995.
