Between 1991 and 1992, a number of Ferrari 348 TB owners had their cars extensively modified by Zagato to create the Zagato Elaborazione version. While the modified cars had a more aggressive appearance, their engine and running gear remained unchanged from the stock 348 TB. This was because Zagato focused on the body modifications and left the engine tuning to individual owners.
Zagato completely redesigned the body of the car using hand-made aluminum panels. The front of the car featured a new bumper that replaced the original fake central grille with the Ferrari prancing horse logo. The sides were equipped with enlarged NACA ducts for cooling the engine, and matching side skirts. At the rear, Zagato fabricated a new engine cover with a clear glass section to showcase the V8 engine. A new triple light arrangement and an electronically-operated spoiler were also added.
One of the signature design elements of the Zagato Elaborazione was the addition of a Double Bubble roof. This roof design allowed for a lower overall height while maintaining adequate headroom for the occupants. Other modifications included custom OZ Racing alloy wheels, external fuel filler caps, and a completely reworked interior with a rear view screen and suede upholstery.
Although Zagato initially planned to produce 22 examples of the Zagato Elaborazione, only 10 cars were ever made. These cars have a distinctive look that has aged in a unique manner over the years.
