Despite being called the 911, this car had little resemblance to the production 911 model. It was designed specifically for competing in the GT1 class of sportscar racing, which necessitated a street-legal version for homologation.
The Porsche 911 GT1 moved away from the traditional rear-engine layout of the 911s and instead had a mid-engine design. What made it unique was its purpose-built nature as a race car, rather than being adapted from a street-legal vehicle. It was equipped with a twin-turbo flat-six engine producing an impressive 600 bhp. In 1996, the 911 GT1 reached a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph) on the famous Mulsanne Straight.
