When Chevrolet launched the C8 Corvette ZR1, they vowed it would set new benchmarks for performance within the brand. This ZR1 not only continues the esteemed ZR1 lineage but also becomes the first Corvette to exceed 1,000 horsepower, boasting a 5.5-liter turbocharged V8 that delivers 1,064 hp.
One of the most pressing inquiries regarding the new ZR1 was its top speed capabilities. Chevrolet addressed this question definitively when the car achieved an impressive 233 mph on the high-speed oval at the Automotive Testing Papenburg (ATP) site in Germany, demonstrating its capability to stand alongside the elite supercars globally.
This remarkable achievement was accomplished with a completely stock ZR1, featuring the original chassis, aerodynamic kit, and performance components—a rarity among record-setting vehicles. The car was set in “Top Speed” mode, which optimizes chassis controls for peak velocity.
Notably, GM President Mark Reuss was behind the wheel during this testing phase, accompanied by an engineer as a passenger. The ZR1 reached 233 mph at redline in sixth gear, establishing a record not only for an American automobile but also for cars priced under $1 million.
