In 2004, Ferrari revealed the Superamerica, a convertible version of the 575M limited to 559 units. Inspired by classic 1950s and 60s GT cars, the 575M Superamerica maintained the design of the coupe but introduced a unique pivoting roof system.
Designed by Leonardo Fioravanti, the Superamerica’s roof was a first in a production car. With a carbon fiber frame and electrochromic glass, the roof could adjust its transparency, allowing light like a sunroof or blocking sunlight. The roof could retract within 10 seconds, converting the car into a convertible.
The Superamerica also offered a ‘Handling GTC’ package derived from the 575 GT Competizione Berlinetta. This upgrade included carbon-ceramic brakes, 19″ wheels, stiffer suspension, a titanium racing exhaust, and improved steering, enhancing the car’s performance. The 5.75-liter V12 engine from the 612 Scaglietti delivered 540 hp, propelling the car from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds.
