The Volvo XC90, despite being an older three-row luxury SUV, continues to be a top contender in its class, challenging rivals like the BMW X5, Audi Q7, and Jeep Grand Cherokee L. The 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge stands out with its classic design, impressive electric driving range, and spacious and comfortable interior for families.
Since its debut in 2026, Volvo has made minor improvements to its flagship SUV without altering its design. The XC90 is available in three trim levels: Core, Plus, and Ultimate, all equipped with all-wheel drive. The top-tier T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid offers an electric-only range of up to 32 miles, making it an appealing option for those not yet ready for a fully electric vehicle.
The 2024 Volvo XC90 showcases Scandinavian design with a stylish exterior featuring a sophisticated front end and distinctive tall taillights that have aged gracefully. Despite its age, the XC90’s design remains modern and attractive. While it maintains a square shape, the XC90 also presents a strong and agile presence for its size. Opting for 21-inch wheels complements the XC90’s large wheel arches, though smaller wheels with taller sidewalls provide a smoother ride.
In terms of performance, the 2024 XC90 offers ample power. The XC90 Recharge plug-in hybrid, with 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque, is the most powerful model available. Despite its weight, the XC90 Recharge can go from 0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds, a swift feat for a three-row SUV.
With its 18.8-kWh battery pack, the XC90 can travel up to 32 miles on electric power, achieving a combined fuel economy rating of 27 mpg. On the road, the XC90 is more focused on smooth cruising than high-performance driving, especially with the optional air suspension that absorbs rough road conditions.
Safety is paramount for Volvo, and the 2024 XC90 excels in this area, performing well in crash tests and offering standard driver-assistance features such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, adaptive LED headlights, and parking sensors. The XC90 also includes Volvo’s Pilot Assist system, providing limited hands-free driving capability.
Inside, the XC90 maintains high standards with its spacious and finely crafted cabin. It boasts one of the best interiors in the luxury SUV category, accommodating up to seven passengers with its Scandinavian design. The seats are upholstered in an innovative, eco-friendly wool blend fabric. The front and second rows offer generous space for adults, while the third row is best suited for children or shorter passengers. When the second and third rows are folded, the cargo space expands to 85.7 cubic feet. With all seats in place, there’s 15.8 cubic feet of cargo room.
Despite the attractive interior of the XC90 Recharge, its infotainment system feels outdated. The 9-inch vertical touchscreen, while user-friendly, lacks the modern appearance of its competitors. The system’s response time may be sluggish, and the screen size feels small. Additionally, it lacks wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, indicating its dated nature.
The starting price for the 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge is $73,195 for the base Core trim, while the top-tier Ultimate trim begins at $80,895.
The 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge remains a standout option for buyers due to its timeless design, luxurious interior, and impressive electric driving range. It strikes a harmonious balance between performance and sophistication, setting it apart in the luxury three-row SUV class.
