As SUVs and electric vehicles rule the automotive landscape, the thrill of driving a simple, fun sports car is becoming scarce. Thankfully, Toyota has answered the call with the 2024 GR86 Trueno Edition, a tribute to the brand’s sports car legacy and a delight for enthusiasts. Limited to just 860 units, this special edition not only enhances the already impressive GR86 but also pays homage to Toyota’s iconic AE86 Trueno.
The GR86 Trueno Edition takes the sleek design of the GR86 and incorporates nostalgic elements reminiscent of the AE86 Trueno. It sports a unique two-tone exterior with a black hood, Trueno Edition side panel graphics, black painted duckbill spoiler, black metallic finished 18-inch wheels, and special black door handles and mirror caps. A distinct Trueno Edition badge adorns the front and rear, while the interior boasts sport seats wrapped in ultrasuede and red leather, accented with red stitching on the steering wheel and shift boot. Performance upgrades include ZF SACHS dampers and Brembo brakes.
What truly sets the GR86 Trueno Edition apart is its outstanding handling. Powered by a 2.4-liter flat-4 engine producing 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, the GR86 offers an exciting yet manageable driving experience. Available with a six-speed manual transmission, it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, showcasing its prowess on the track or twisty roads. Opt for the six-speed automatic, and the acceleration time is 6.6 seconds to 60 mph.
Drivers can easily control oversteer in the GR86, providing a connected driving experience rarely found in modern cars. Precise steering and a Torsen limited-slip rear differential enhance the dynamics, making the GR86 a joy to drive.
Inside, the GR86 boasts a practical layout with supportive front seats that offer ample room, even for a helmeted driver during track days. While the rear seats are more suited for storage, they add to the car’s convenience, given the modest 6.3 cubic feet trunk.
Technologically, the GR86 features a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8.0-inch touchscreen, an upgrade from the previous generation. However, these screens may still feel somewhat outdated.
The starting price for the 2024 Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition is $35,815.
In a market saturated with practical yet uninspiring vehicles, the 2024 Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition shines as a rare gem. It beckons enthusiasts to savor the driving experience, blending power, precision, and a touch of retro allure.
