A technology upgrade enhances the 2022 Tiguan, while retaining its spacious cabin that sets it apart in the compact crossover class. The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan renewal puts it in direct competition with other popular models like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Hyundai Tucson.
The updated 2022 Tiguan showcases fresh interior and exterior styling, as well as tech improvements across all trim levels. Volkswagen notes that the Tiguan’s size remains almost the same, which is a benefit for families due to its roomy second row. Models with front-wheel drive now offer an optional third row nestled in the cargo area.
While many SUVs are opting for unconventional designs, the Tiguan stays true to its straightforward aesthetic. Its simplicity stands out amidst competitors that emphasize sharp angles and curves. The Tiguan retains its classic appearance after the update, with clean lines and a user-friendly design. The updated features include new alloy wheel designs and standard LED headlights, with an optional LED center light strip for added nighttime visibility.
The Tiguan is equipped with a turbo-4 engine producing 184 horsepower paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The acceleration is modest, with a more spirited feel in second gear, although it lacks quick initial speed whether in front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The soft suspension setup results in some body roll during cornering but enhances comfort during daily driving. The steering, while light, now offers drive modes (Normal, Sport, and Custom) for front-wheel drive Tiguan models in 2022.
Fuel economy estimates for the Tiguan average 23 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and a combined 26 mpg for front-wheel drive models. All-wheel drive models achieve slightly lower numbers at 22/29/25 mpg, with the R-Line AWD variant at 21/28/24 mpg. The Tiguan competes well on fuel efficiency compared to similar models in its class, although the new Taos from Volkswagen surpasses it with up to 31 mpg combined for front-wheel drive versions.
While the 2022 Tiguan’s safety ratings are pending, the 2021 model received a “Top Safety Pick” from the IIHS. Base models come with essential safety features like automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitors. The higher trims offer more advanced safety options like adaptive cruise control and active steering. Inside, SE and above models boast haptic climate controls and digital cockpit displays of varying sizes.
The Tiguan’s spacious back seat and generous cargo storage make it a practical choice for families. Its larger size within the compact segment provides ample legroom and cargo space, outperforming some competitors. The optional third row in the Tiguan is suitable mainly for children on short trips due to its limited space.
Prices for the 2022 Tiguan start at $27,190 for the base S trim, offering an array of standard features. The SE trim at $30,690 adds more convenience features and wireless connectivity options, making it a popular choice among buyers. The top-tier SEL R-Line trim at $37,790 is fully loaded with premium amenities and a larger digital cockpit display with enhanced resolution.
Volkswagen has refined its Tiguan model over time, making it a competitive choice in the compact crossover market. The 2022 Tiguan continues this trend with additional safety features and advanced technology, making it a strong value proposition in its class.
