The 2022 model year brings a complete overhaul to the Lexus NX lineup, with the standout addition being the NX 450h+ model, the brand’s sole plug-in hybrid variant. Noteworthy for its electric-only range and top-tier speed, the 450h+ offers a compelling package.
The 2022 Lexus NX 450h+ shares its platform with the Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid and is equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a hybrid system that boasts a total output of 302 horsepower. The model comes with all-wheel drive as standard and can cover 37 miles on electric power alone, slightly less than the RAV4 Prime’s 42-mile range.
In terms of electric range, the Lexus outperforms competitors like the Volvo XC60 Recharge and Audi Q5 55 TFSI, offering 2 more miles than the former and significantly more than the latter.
Charging the NX 450h+ takes around four and a half hours with a Level 2 240-volt charger utilizing the standard 3.3kW onboard charger, which can be reduced to two and a half hours with the optional 6.6kW charger.
One of the major advantages of the NX 450h+ is its performance credentials, being the most powerful among its siblings with an impressive 0-60 mph time of 6.0 seconds. In comparison, the Volvo XC60 Recharge boasts 455 hp for an even faster acceleration. Moreover, the 450h+ offers a more refined ride and superior suspension setup, although it prioritizes comfort over sportiness, a trait where the Volvo shines.
Internally, the highlight of the Lexus NX is the new 14.0-inch touchscreen featuring an improved infotainment system, with a standard 9.8-inch screen also available. While the system is modern and responsive, the digital instrument cluster and steering wheel controls could use improvement. Wireless charging is a convenient feature, although the setup may not secure phones effectively.
Accommodating to passengers with ample space and maintaining cargo capacity comparable to its counterparts, the NX 450h+ stands out for its plug-in hybrid capabilities. However, the underfloor storage seen in other NX models is absent in this version.
Starting at $57,225, the 2022 Lexus NX 450h+ offers a compelling package. For those seeking a sportier aesthetic and an adaptive variable suspension, the F Sport Handling variant is available at $58,475.
In summary, Lexus has set a high standard with its first plug-in hybrid, the NX 450h+, which builds upon the strengths of the new NX lineup with its impressive electric range and enhanced performance capabilities.
