Volkswagen has made some changes to the lineup for the eighth generation Golf in the US, but we still have access to the most exciting versions – the GTI and Golf R. The 2022 Golf R remains at the top of the lineup and now features a more robust 315 hp turbocharged engine with enhanced styling and improved performance.

2022 VW Golf R Review

The Golf R is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, an increase from the previous 288 hp and 280 lb-ft. This puts the Golf R ahead of the Honda Civic Type R and Hyundai Veloster N in terms of power. Time will tell if Honda can extract more power from the next-generation Civic Type R.

The engine can be paired with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It also features the 4Motion all-wheel drive system with a rear differential that can distribute torque between the rear wheels. The Golf R offers different driving modes like Comfort, Sport, Race, Drift, Special, and Custom. Additionally, it boasts larger front disc brakes, variable-ratio steering, adaptive dampers, and a sporty exhaust system.

The increased power at lower RPMs is immediately noticeable, making it enjoyable to drive on winding roads. The dual-clutch automatic transmission shifts quickly and smoothly, adding to the driving experience. With its excellent grip and responsive brakes, the Golf R handles sharp turns effortlessly. It accelerates briskly when pushed, demonstrating its capability.

Despite its performance, the Golf R offers decent fuel efficiency, achieving 23 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined with the automatic transmission, and 20/28/23 mpg with the manual.2022 VW Golf R Review

Inside, the Golf R provides ample space for four passengers with 13.5 cubic feet of cargo room. The interior exudes a premium feel compared to the Civic Type R, featuring a modern dashboard with a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.0-inch touchscreen. However, the infotainment system and controls could be improved. The touch controls can be slow and confusing, and the absence of physical knobs for essential functions like climate control and audio volume is inconvenient. The steering wheel controls may take time to get used to, and the lack of illumination for the sliders below the display is an oversight.2022 VW Golf R Review

The 2022 VW Golf R is available in a single trim level, equipped with features like a head-up display, sunroof, 19-inch alloy wheels with summer tires, and the 10-inch touchscreen and digital gauge cluster. The starting price for the Golf R is $45,085, including destination.

In conclusion, the 2022 VW Golf R offers a blend of fun and practicality that is hard to match.
