In the recent past, we’ve heard and actually seen some unbelievably futuristic ideas shaping the automotive industry. Some of them would have been loudly laughed off by industry players a few decades ago, yet they are now the future and will dictate the direction of this field going forward.
A Los Angeles startup named Canoo recently unveiled an electric car that you can ride on through monthly subscriptions. The bread-shaped van has an eight-seater capacity and is like nothing we’ve seen before.
The seats in the cabin are U-shaped as opposed to the row seating arrangement. The entire cabin has 188 cubic feet of space shared by passengers and cargo.
The design aside, the idea of owning the car through subscriptions sounds amazing. Stefan Krause, a board member with Canoo makes it sound more than just a deal to have your ride. He says, “You own the car, we will take care of the car, we will maintain the car. You just pay a monthly fee. Also, you can walk away at any time.”
Think of it like Netflix where you subscribe and choose when to use the services. This is quite a radical approach that will undoubtedly disrupt things as we currently know them.
Canoo’s CEO Ulrich Kranz said, “We believe that the potential of [electric vehicle] architecture can enable a post-SUV era that addresses the ever-growing desire for space and value,” adding that they “promised a truly different approach for EVs, and our Canoo proves that we can deliver on that vision.”
Although slated to come around in 2021, we can’t wait to sample this revolutionary idea.
