The allure of black cars is so significant that even Bugatti, the luxury car maker, named one of their models La Voiture Noire, which translates to the black car in English. Now, BMW is stepping into the competition by introducing the darkest black car available on the market.
In collaboration with Surrey Nano Systems and Levitation 29, BMW has developed what is considered the blackest car globally.
This new black paint color, known as Vantablack VBx2, is created from carbon nanotubes that absorb more light than any other color, creating a visual effect of extreme darkness. In its purest form, this paint blocks 99.96% of visible light, creating an optical illusion that alters the vehicle’s appearance. Vantablack is highly coveted due to its rarity, with a value exceeding that of gold and diamonds by weight. In a display of true luxury, BMW has applied this paint to their X6 model.
Although many are eager to own such a unique vehicle, the BMW car with Vantablack paint is not up for sale. The company intends to utilize this model for research on light absorption, particularly in relation to self-driving technology. The aim is to create an illusion that tricks observers into perceiving the car as a black hole or void, giving it a two-dimensional appearance with less defined body features.
The project from concept to completion took 10 months. The estimated value of the vehicle featuring Vantablack paint is $64,300 without factoring in the cost of the paint itself. As the Vantablack-coated car is not slated for sale anytime soon, enthusiasts can only speculate on its potential value.
