As we look at what this car is all about, know ye all that Mazda has sold over 1 million of this sports car in 29 years. As such, it remains one of the most recognizable sports cars the world has had.
It’s popularity is not blank or forced. It is an icon that has curved it’s own space for all the right reasons.
As if eager to retain its history trajectory, the MX-5 still powers only its rear wheels with naturally aspirated petrol engines. There are no all-wheel drive or turbos but a lot of tech benefits these engines.
If you haven’t heard of Mazda’s ‘Skyactiv’ engine development, then this is one of the beneficiaries. Engine series remain 1.5 and 2.0-liter, with the producing 130 bhp and 112 lb ft.
The latter has a higher upscale as power ascends to 182 bhp. It will achieve 0-60 mph in just 6.5 secs.
In some trims you will get the Apple CarPlay alongside active safety overhauls such as lane-departure warning and blind-spot monitoring systems – as well as some interior quality improvements. This year, the Mazda MX-5 is still as sporty as it has always been.
In the same breath, it appeals to the younger generation or the outgoing driver who wants to retain a summer feel on this convertible. Suffice it to say that this is a practical sporty car for the times you want to feel a little outgoing.
