The iconic M5 sedan by BMW is stepping into a new era with the introduction of its latest plug-in hybrid model.
Under the hood, the novel M5 boasts a remarkable duo: a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine coupled with an electric motor, delivering a whopping 727 horsepower and a torque of 1,000 Nm. This propels the M5 into the elite realm of supercars.
The hybrid M5 promises an electric-only range of over 40 miles due to its 18.6 kWh battery, making it an excellent companion for city commuting and brief excursions. Its design exudes a bolder stance with actual air intake features, and an overall aggressive aesthetic continues to radiate both inside and out. Comfort and luxury aren’t compromised, with Marino leather seats, customized M displays, and chic sporty elements present in the cabin.
One trade-off of the hybrid technology is its impact on the vehicle’s mass; the M5 tips the scales at a substantial 2.4 tons thanks to the battery unit. Consequently, acceleration from 0-62 mph is slightly subdued at 3.5 seconds, a minor dip compared to its older sibling.
For those interested in the fiscal aspects, the M5 enters the market at £102,000, presenting only a modest increase of £2,000 from its forerunner.
For an in-depth review, Mat Watson from Carwow has relayed a comprehensive look at the M5 on his YouTube channel, which can be found in the video below.
