The Fascinating Story of the 1948 Porsche Roadster

For its 70th Anniversary, Porsche undertook an intriguing project to recreate one of their most significant cars ever manufactured. They painstakingly replicated the iconic vehicle using the construction methods from that era.

Relying extensively on historical documentation, they succeeded in producing an exact replica of the original car. It lacks an engine and its rear axle is constructed from a simple pipe.

The front axle, including the steering system and wheels, was sourced from a Volkswagen Beetle. The entire building process took approximately eight months. The replica is now touring various locations around the globe.

The 1948 Porsche 356 Roadster was the brainchild of Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche, the founder’s son. It featured a four-cylinder, air-cooled, rear-mounted engine. This very first road-certified 356 participated in a race in Innsbruck, where it emerged victorious in its class.

Vancouver had the honor of being the first Canadian city to host the 356 “No. 1” Roadster at the Luxury & Supercar Weekend held at the Vandusen Gardens.

As of the end of 2018, the 356 ‘No.1’ Roadster had traveled an impressive 46,854 km worldwide, while the show car had covered an even more remarkable distance of 53,898 km.
