The Lexus RX has been very popular for Lexus, but it has never been known for being particularly exciting to drive or look at. However, this has changed with the introduction of the 2023 RX, especially the 2023 Lexus RX 500h F Sport Performance.
The RX 500h F Sport Performance is the top model in the RX lineup and it is a hybrid vehicle. It is powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a front inverter/electric motor and an additional electric motor at the rear axle, producing a combined 366 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
What sets the RX 500h apart is its impressive acceleration, going from 0-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds, making it the fastest RX model yet. While it is quick, the focus of the RX 500h remains on comfort rather than pure sportiness, unlike competitors from BMW or Porsche.
The RX 500h features a unique all-wheel drive system called Direct4, which can quickly distribute torque from front to rear. Additionally, it feels more nimble due to its Dynamic Rear Steering system, allowing the rear wheels to turn up to 4 degrees in alignment with the front wheels.
Although the RX 500h offers more power than previous models, it could still improve its sporty performance on twisty roads. The suspension is tuned for comfort over aggressive handling, but the vehicle feels more stable on the road. A more performance-oriented F version could enhance the driving experience.
The exterior of the RX 500h has been enhanced with a longer wheelbase, shorter rear overhang, wider rear track, and increased width, giving it a sportier appearance.
The RX 500h achieves a fuel efficiency rating of 27 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined, making it more economical than the RX 350 AWD.
Inside, the 2023 RX offers two rows of seats with a modern and luxurious cabin featuring a 14-inch touchscreen and digital gauge cluster. The infotainment system is greatly improved, but some controls could benefit from physical buttons or dials instead of relying solely on the touchscreen.
The RX 500h’s interior adds a sporty flair with bolstered front seats, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, aluminum pedals, and black trim.
The starting price for the 2023 Lexus RX F Sport Performance is $62,750.
The 2023 Lexus RX 500h F Sport Performance stands out as a sporty and enjoyable vehicle to drive, although it may not match the performance of high-performance models like BMW M or Mercedes-AMG.
