Powertrain

The essence of a Lamborghini has always resided in its driving mechanics. With the introduction of the Temerario, Lamborghini adopts a completely new perspective, with five years devoted to developing a super sports car powertrain that is nothing short of extraordinary. This innovative setup comprises a high-revving biturbo Internal Combustion Engine working synergistically with three electric motors.

This powertrain is central to Lamborghini’s second super sports car within its High-Performance Electrified Vehicle (HPEV) category. The initial goal was to achieve maximum specific power and torque while maintaining the responsiveness of a classic high-revving naturally aspirated engine. For this reason, only top-quality components are utilized in the drivetrain: the new 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine achieves a specific output of 200 CV per liter and features an oil-cooled axial flow electric motor fully integrated into the V8 configuration. Additional propulsion is provided by two electric motors located on the front axle.

Thanks to the turbochargers, the linearity and progression with high-revving characteristics—previously exclusive to naturally aspirated engines—now enable high torque at very high engine speeds.

The newly developed engine, designated L411, ranks among the most powerful engines in the segment. The V8 biturbo generates its peak output of 800 CV between 9,000 and 9,750 rpm and offers 730 Nm of torque from 4,000 to 7,000 rpm. The electric motor, situated in P1 position (between the V8 engine and the gearbox), ensures immediate responsiveness from low engine speeds while maintaining consistent performance throughout the range.

achieved a performance profile that feels both linear and boundless, allowing for a thrilling experience as it accelerates up to 10,000 revolutions per minute. Enhanced by two substantial turbochargers, the system amplifies efficiency and performance at high speeds. These turbochargers are strategically positioned within the engine’s V configuration, optimizing both space and thermal management as part of a “hot V8” design. This V8 biturbo engine can peak at 10,000 rpm, with the turbochargers providing a maximum boost pressure of 2.5 bar (absolute). The turbines utilize an electrical wastegate and incorporate a wheel-speed sensor for precise control. Additionally, Lamborghini has engineered compact air filter boxes featuring tubular cartridges to maximize space and improve efficiency.

At the core of the engine is a flat-plane crankshaft with a 180-degree angle between its bends, a design often seen in racing engines. This configuration promotes excellent fluid dynamic behavior owing to even firing intervals, and it produces a distinctive sound profile. The use of titanium conrods helps minimize the rotating mass, enhancing strength while reducing weight. The casting material for the engine is A357+Cu, a choice aligning with motorsport standards.

The engine’s durable finger followers are coated in Diamond Like Carbon (DLC), enabling them to handle speeds of up to 11,000 rpm—a performance threshold typically associated with racing engines. The engineers drew inspiration for this layout from motorsport principles, efficiently positioning many auxiliary components on one side, including the two water pumps that facilitate both intercooler and engine cooling, as well as an electronically-controlled valve for fine temperature regulation.

The oil and water pumps are organized in series on the right side of the engine, operating at a predetermined ratio that allows for pump speeds of up to 7,800 rpm. Importantly, the oil tank is integrated on one side and utilizes a dry sump design with five-stage gear scavenge pumps. This setup contributes to a lower center of gravity for the Temerario, enhancing its handling agility. A new water-cooling system ensures optimal thermal management, while the internal cooling strategy for the cylinder heads benefits from advanced 3D printing technology, promoting uniform cooling of the combustion chamber and increasing resistance to knocking. Direct petrol injection finely atomizes fuel into the eight combustion chambers at pressures reaching 350 bar, facilitating rapid and efficient combustion.

The result is an engine that combines the smooth revving characteristics typically found in naturally aspirated engines with the power delivery of a turbocharged unit, complemented by electric drive systems. Lamborghini has successfully created a distinctive performance experience marked by its unique operational dynamics and sound.Lamborghini has successfully created a new V8 biturbo engine that merges the smooth rev development characteristics of its previous naturally aspirated V10 with the immense power and torque typical of contemporary turbocharged engines. When paired with three electric motors, this system delivers a remarkable output of 920 CV / 676 kW.

Sound

Lamborghini has committed extensive technical resources to crafting a distinct and recognizable auditory experience for the Temerario’s entirely new powertrain, ensuring a captivating and characteristically Lamborghini sound and sensory feedback.

The level of technical sophistication required to create this unique soundscape is considerable. To generate an emotionally resonant, sporty sound that builds up to 10,000 rpm, Lamborghini incorporates various engineering solutions and enhances them with high-frequency modulation effects.

A special link between the engine banks amplifies the sound produced by the power unit as engine speed increases. Depending on the selected driving mode, the silencer box and exhaust valve of the V8 biturbo function in the lower rev range to optimize acoustic comfort. Different driving modes are distinctly conveyed through dedicated acoustic tuning.

An exhaust system that channels sound from the manifold to the tailpipes further accentuates the combustion processes of the engine. With an optimized pipe layout, Lamborghini ensures a crisp and clear sound. The elevation and positioning of the exhaust tailpipes along the transverse axis intensify the engine’s sharpness with a high-frequency element, thereby highlighting its power.

Moreover, Lamborghini has engineered the engine mounts and body to provide a flat crankshaft feel that the driver can experience during high engine speeds and under full load. This flat-plane crankshaft design, positioning the crank pins at an angle of 180 degrees, allows the V8 biturbo to create subtle vibrations.Lamborghini enhances the intensity of vibrations at elevated engine speeds, amplifying the overall sensation of speed and power during high revs. The sound engineers adeptly bring the exhilarating sporty acoustics into the cabin while highlighting the preferred frequencies with lightweight body elements and panels. The subtle vibrations conveyed to the chassis enrich the sensory experience, complemented by an exciting auditory backdrop. As the engine accelerates, seat vibrations become more pronounced, particularly at high RPMs nearing 10,000—speeds typically associated only with motorsport.

Additionally, a sound symposer generates acoustic waves inside the vehicle, fostering an immersive auditory environment across all driving modes.

Lamborghini has tailored distinct soundscapes for various driving settings: Città, Strada, Sport, and Corsa. In the Città mode, the vehicle prioritizes comfort by featuring a specialized tone from the electric drive unit, yielding a smooth and pleasant auditory experience suited for urban settings. In this mode, the Temerario operates quietly and without emissions.

When set to Strada mode for rural roads and high-speed highways, passengers enjoy a refined V8 biturbo symphony characterized by evenly distributed frequencies, eliminating harsh peaks for a sporty yet subtle driving ambiance. In the more dynamic Sport and Corsa modes, Lamborghini accentuates the second and fourth-order harmonics of a V8 four-stroke engine along with air-intake sounds, delivering a thrilling auditory experience. At peak engine speeds approaching 10,000 RPM, the vehicle not only generates impressive power of up to 920 horsepower but also produces an unmistakable sound—defining the new auditory identity of Lamborghini for a new era.

Three Electric Motors for Assistance

The latest powertrain system incorporates three electric motors. Each motor delivers 110 kW of power and plays a vital role in the overall powertrain approach. Two oil-cooled axial flow electric motors, achieving a combined peak output of 220 kW and torque levels of up to 2,150 Nm (with a continuous output of 60 kW), power the front axle when necessary to facilitate all-wheel drive capability. The front electric axle is lightweight, weighing only 73 kilograms, with each motor tipping the scales at 15.5 kilograms.

A significant challenge was to design the powertrain to be as compact as possible. Engineers achieved this by integrating the electric motor directly into the V8 biturbo housing, eliminating the need for an intermediate clutch. This setup effectively mitigates any turbo lag at all speeds, delivering 300 Nm of torque. The entire electric drive unit is positioned conveniently between the combustion engine and the dual-clutch transmission. This electric motor also functions as both a starter and a three-phase generator.

Additionally, the two electric motors located on the front axle enhance overall power output, allowing the new Temerario to operate as a fully electric super sports car. Through this innovation, Lamborghini is able to cut CO2 emissions by as much as 50 percent compared to the Huracán[4].

Battery

The Lamborghini Temerario features a lithium-ion battery pack with a high-specific power of 4500 W/kg, located within the central tunnel. This design choice aims to keep the vehicle’s center of gravity low and achieves optimal weight distribution. The battery pack is safeguarded by a lower structural layer and connects to the front and rear electric motors, along with an integrated recharging unit.

This battery pack boasts dimensions of 1550 mm in length, 301 mm in height, and 240 mm in width, utilizing pouch cells to provide a total capacity of 3.8 kWh. When the charge reaches depletion, it can be replenished using ordinary household alternating current or charging stations, capable of delivering up to 7 kW, allowing it to fully recharge within just 30 minutes. Additionally, it can recharge via regenerative braking from the front wheels or directly from the V8 engine.

Incorporating an e-axle, the Temerario is equipped with the Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo (LDV) 2.0 system. Electric torque vectoring enhances the car’s maneuverability in tight corners and stability during high-speed turns by effectively distributing torque to each wheel. Unlike traditional systems, this new torque vectoring approach resorts to braking only when absolutely essential, maximizing efficiency while facilitating a more natural driving experience and enhancing overall performance. During braking, both the e-axle and rear electric motor assist in deceleration, alleviating brake wear while simultaneously recharging the battery.

Dual-clutch Transmission

The eight gears of the second Lamborghini super sports car in the High-Performance Electrified Vehicle (HPEV) segment are managed by an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) installed transversely behind the V8 engine. This newly engineered compact transmission fulfills all requirements for such a high-performance drive unit.

To minimize installation space and weight, the design deviates from the conventional DCT configuration. An extra hollow shaft enables the use of the same synchronizers for multiple gear torque paths. The new DCT, devoid of electrical components, is lighter than the Huracán’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and offers faster gear shifts. With dimensions of 560 millimeters in length, 750 millimeters in width, and just 580 millimeters in height, it remains remarkably compact.

Lamborghini has integrated the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission behind the V8 biturbo, allowing for adequate space within the center tunnel for the lithium-ion battery that powers the electric motors. This technical arrangement also enhances the weight distribution of the Temerario and ensures a compact wheelbase, contributing to excellent driving dynamics and balanced handling.

With the advanced eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, drivers can expect exceptionally quick shift times, even during spirited driving. Continuous downshifts are particularly seamless; while braking and holding the left shift paddle, the transmission will downshift sequentially, allowing for an engaging experience as the driver feels and hears each gear change. The long ratio eighth gear effectively lowers engine speed, optimizing fuel efficiency and enhancing drivability at cruising speeds. Furthermore, the Temerario transmission features a mechanical reverse gear system.
