Why was the car used at a land speed event?
Reports indicate that Gregory Ditch, a teacher at Naperville North High School in Indiana, had the students build a racing truck for an event. However, the truck broke down on the way, leading Ditch to decide last-minute to use a rental car to ensure participation.
What does the Supra’s owner have to say?
The car is owned by Geovanni Morales, who listed it on Turo. After profiling Ditch, Morales believed he was responsible and knowledgeable about cars due to his teaching background, trusting him to take care of his vehicle.
Upon the return of the car, Morales noticed something was amiss. After seeing social media posts, he discovered pictures of the car at the event. Turo confirmed that the car was rented through their platform, but the usage violated their terms and conditions, which prohibit renting for prohibited purposes such as racing.
Morales observed that all the tires were worn out, and the brakes needed to be replaced. The Supra was driven at speeds exceeding 160 mph.
