McLaren Automotive has elevated the Mercedes-Benz SLR with a unique “McLaren Edition” enhancement. Insights from SLR owners contributed to advancements in handling, ride comfort, and aerodynamic performance. Enhancements featured a carbon-Kevlar front floor, wheel arch vents inspired by the 722 GT, a redesigned rear diffuser, a larger air brake, and a lighter ceramic-coated exhaust system for its supercharged 5.4-liter V-8 engine.
The modifications led to a decrease in weight, an increase in downforce of 15% compared to the SLR 722 Edition, and a 10 mm reduction in ride height achieved through revamped springs and dampers. The reshaped front air intakes are reminiscent of the McLaren logo. Just 25 McLaren Editions were produced, making this variant more limited than the Stirling Moss version.
Currently, you have the opportunity to acquire one of these exclusive Mercedes-Benz SLR variants through RM Sotheby’s. This particular model originated as a Japanese-market SLR and has undergone the McLaren Edition upgrades.
In 2017, distinctive features such as 722 S-spec wheels, tinted lights, and a black Alcantara interior adorned with red stitching and “MSO” headrest embroidery, alongside an Alcantara steering wheel, were included.
The car’s most eye-catching characteristic is its metallic red exterior, which transforms into black under low-light conditions for a captivating effect. Finished by MSO in 2019, it returned to Japan and has accumulated approximately 1,200 km since then.
