Peugeot will be making a grand return to the world of high-stakes endurance racing in 2022 with the introduction of a hybrid hypercar. The renowned automaker is gearing up to compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours.
The company is fully committed to participating in the 2022/23 WEC season, culminating in the renowned Le Mans race. Peugeot boasts previous successes in this arena, having clinched victory at Le Mans three times in the past with a hybrid-powered contender.
While specific details are scarce at the moment, PSA motorsport director Jean-Marc Finot expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I am very excited about leveraging the skills and dedication of my team for this endeavor.” He believes in his team’s ability to excel in this new challenge, drawing from their extensive experience in elite FIA championships and their unwavering drive for success.
Peugeot’s last foray into this competition occurred between 2007 and 2011, during which they fielded the diesel-powered 908 HDi FAP that secured victory in 2009. Despite previously developing a hybrid version of the car, it never made it to the racing circuit.
The entry of a Peugeot hypercar into the WEC is poised to elevate the championship’s status. While Toyota and Aston Martin are confirmed as key competitors, more contenders are expected to join the fray in the near future.
