The current generation of the GT is nearing its 10th year in the market. Mercedes-AMG has continuously updated the car to keep it current. Now, there are rumors that the German automaker is planning something significant for this grand tourer. Could Mercedes-AMG enhance this car with a powerful engine to rival other supercars in the market?
Second Generation of Mercedes-AMG GT: What to Expect
Affalterbach is gearing up for the launch of the next generation of the GT. The upcoming model could be named the Mercedes-AMG GT S E Performance and might feature the same powertrain as the four-door coupe. This model is anticipated to be the flagship variant in the GT lineup.
Regarding the powertrain, it is speculated to include a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine combined with an electric motor and a 6.1 kWh battery pack for additional support. The combined output of the engine and motor is expected to be an impressive 831 horsepower and a staggering 1,033 lb-ft of torque. With this power, the Mercedes-AMG GT S E Performance could achieve a 0-62 mph sprint in under 3 seconds and a sub-10-second 0-124 mph time. The top speed is projected to be around 196 mph or 316 km/h.
Compared to its larger four-door counterpart, the GT S E Performance is likely to offer enhanced speed and agility. Mercedes may opt for the same 9-speed automatic transmission and include the 4Matic+ system for all-wheel power distribution.
Additional features on the car may consist of ceramic brakes, an improved chassis, enhanced aerodynamics, and new color choices to differentiate it from the standard GT.
Competition for the Mercedes-AMG GT S E Performance
When the car hits the market, Mercedes is expected to position it as a direct competitor to the Porsche 911.
