Mazda MX-5 Miata: Striving to Shine in the Market

In an automotive landscape dominated by electric vehicles and SUVs, the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata stands out as a beacon for enthusiasts who appreciate a pure driving experience. This iconic convertible has upheld its lightweight, fun, and affordable ethos since its inception.

Despite being in the market for some time, Mazda keeps refining the MX-5 Miata. The 2022 model introduces Kinematic Posture Control, a system aimed at enhancing performance. This system subtly brakes the inner rear wheel during high-g cornering to reduce body roll, enhance steering response, and aid in cornering stability. Additionally, new features for the 2022 MX-5 include a Platinum Quartz Metallic paint option and Terracotta Nappa leather seats.

Powering the MX-5 is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 181 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. Although not overpowering on paper, the MX-5’s powertrain offers responsive performance, delivering a connected driving feel. In an era of technologically advanced vehicles, the raw driving experience of the MX-5 Miata is a refreshing change. While acceleration onto highways may require some effort, the engine’s willingness to rev high coupled with its appealing sound contribute to the overall driving enjoyment.

The MX-5’s standout six-speed manual transmission boasts short gear lever throws and a well-weighted clutch, offering a pleasurable shifting experience. Even for those who prefer automatic transmissions, a six-speed option is available. Equipped with direct steering, the MX-5 retains its enthusiastic character on twisty roads despite exhibiting some body roll.

Given its compact size as a roadster, interior space in the MX-5 Miata is limited, with minimal storage options. The narrow center console box and small under-armrest compartment offer the main storage solutions, while the detachable cup holders, though limited in capacity, are serviceable. The trunk provides 4.6 cubic feet of space, suitable for carrying a carry-on suitcase or a few bags.

On the technology front, the MX-5 lags behind a bit with a 7-inch screen housing the Mazda Connect infotainment system, primarily controlled via a rotary knob due to limited touchscreen functionality while driving. Despite feeling somewhat dated and slow to respond, the MX-5 supports wireless Apple CarPlay and features two USB-A ports. A small digital display in the driver’s line of sight provides essential information like remaining fuel range.

In terms of safety features, the MX-5 includes standard driver assistance systems such as blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Notably missing is adaptive cruise control, but the sheer driving pleasure of the MX-5 makes it a trade-off worth considering.

The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata lineup consists of three trim levels: Sport, Club, and Grand Touring; there’s also the hardtop MX-5 Miata RF variant. Pricing starts at $28,715 for the base model, with a fully loaded manual Grand Touring priced at $33,715. The RF model, available in Club and Grand Touring trims, begins at $36,415.

In conclusion, if you’re seeking an exhilarating driving experience within this price range, the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata proves to be a hard contender to beat. While alternatives like the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 exist, they fall short in delivering the same level of driving excitement.
