During the period from 1955 to 1966, Rolls-Royce created one of its most luxurious cars of the time known as the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.
Continuing the tradition of naming their cars with the word “Silver,” following models like the Silver Dawn, the Silver Cloud II set a new standard of elegance and sophistication, eventually making way for the Silver Shadow. Weighing close to two tons, the Silver Cloud was equipped with a 155 horsepower six-cylinder engine paired with a four-speed automatic gearbox as standard. This sizable car measured 5.38 meters (212 inches) long and 1.90 meters (75 inches) wide, establishing itself as a remarkable luxury vehicle in its time.
A few years later, a significant upgrade was introduced to this remarkable vehicle in the form of a 6.23-liter V8 engine. This change was particularly noteworthy as the same engine can be found in many modern Rolls-Royce models, albeit with various enhancements. The car was then rebranded as the Silver Cloud II to signify these new improvements.
Despite minimal changes to its exterior, this enhanced version of the Silver Cloud proved to be immensely popular and successful. It became associated with the iconic slogan from David Ogilvy’s advertising agency: “At 60 mph the loudest noise in this new Rolls-Royce comes from the electric clock.”
