BMW M cars have evolved significantly from their roots with intensely responsive, naturally aspirated engines. The more recent M3 and M5 models have adopted forced induction, and it is anticipated that all future M cars will incorporate some level of hybrid technology.

Frank van Meel, the CEO of BMW M, has indicated that the forthcoming BMW M2 is likely to be the final M model to solely rely on traditional combustion engine power. This transition seems like a natural progression. However, it is inevitable that a day will come when all M cars will shift towards pure electric powertrains.

Van Meel stated, “The BMW M2 is set to uphold its reputation as a driver-focused vehicle with its straight-six engine and rear-wheel drive setup. While we anticipate a growing integration of electrification in our other vehicles, ranging from 48-volt electrical systems and plug-in hybrids to full electric propulsion systems.” He further added, “From this perspective, the M2 will represent the last M model with a purely combustion engine powerplant and without any level of electrification such as a 48-volt onboard network.”

The iconic ‘M’ badge has long been synonymous with delivering an exceptional driving experience. Despite the significant changes over the years, like the transition from straight-sixes to V8s in models such as the E92 M3 and the recent shift to twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engines, BMW M cars have consistently offered exhilarating performance. With the rise of hybrid technology, the classic M cars are likely to become increasingly sought after by enthusiasts.
