2025 Nissan Rogue Platinum AWD Road Test Review

Road trips are the ultimate test for any SUV. Comfort, efficiency, space, and technology all come into play when you’re spending long hours behind the wheel. I recently put the 2025 Nissan Rogue Platinum AWD through a real-world, multi-terrain test—a weeklong journey from Phoenix to Los Angeles, covering everything from open desert highways to mountain climbs, congested city streets, and even coastal beach roads. Here’s how it handled the adventure.

Exterior: A Stylish and Practical Road Trip Companion

At first glance, the Rogue Platinum’s bold V-Motion grille, sleek LED headlights, and 19-inch alloy wheels make it stand out, even in a packed parking lot in LA. The panoramic moonroof was a highlight, offering expansive desert and ocean views along the way. The two-tone black roof and contrasting paint job gave the Rogue a sophisticated, premium touch, making it feel like more than just another compact SUV.

But looks are only half the story—functionality mattered most on this road trip. The hands-free power liftgate was a lifesaver when loading and unloading luggage. The roof rails remained unused on this trip, but they provide flexibility for extra gear should we have needed it.

Interior: Spacious, Comfortable, and Road-Trip Ready

Packing for a week-long adventure can be tricky, but the Divide-N-Hide® cargo system proved to be one of the Rogue’s best features. For two people, there was more than enough space for luggage, hiking gear, beach essentials, and some shopping hauls from LA. The power-folding rear seats added even more flexibility.

The quilted semi-aniline leather-appointed seats offered an unexpectedly high level of comfort, making long hours behind the wheel a breeze. Heated seats and a heated steering wheel came in handy during the early morning departures, while the tri-zone climate control allowed my passenger to set their own temperature without complaints.

One of my favorite road trip perks? The 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with built-in Google Assistant and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Having Google Maps directly integrated into the system meant no fumbling with phone mounts or draining battery life. Plus, the Bose® premium audio system made cruising along California’s coastal highways with the windows down all the more enjoyable.

Performance: From Open Desert Roads to LA Traffic

Driving from Phoenix to Los Angeles meant covering a wide range of terrain—flat desert highways, mountain climbs, city congestion, and tight beachside parking spots. The 1.5L turbocharged engine (201 hp, 225 lb-ft of torque) delivered a solid blend of power and efficiency, never feeling sluggish, even on steep inclines heading into California’s mountain passes.

The XTRONIC CVT transmission is tuned for smooth acceleration, making merging onto freeways a seamless experience. On long stretches of highway, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system and Drive Mode Dial provided added confidence, especially when hitting unexpected patches of rain in the mountains.

Fuel efficiency was another strong suit—averaging around 32 MPG, the Rogue handled the long journey without frequent fuel stops. In fact, I only had to stop for gas when we needed a break for lunch or to stretch our legs.

Navigating Los Angeles traffic is where the Rogue’s compact footprint and easy maneuverability shined. It was effortless to weave through gridlocked lanes, and parking in notoriously tight spots was a breeze thanks to the 3D Enhanced Intelligent Around View® Monitor. The Invisible Hood View was a game-changer in those cramped LA garages where every inch counts.

Driver Experience: Easy, Comfortable, and Stress-Free

One of the biggest wins for the 2025 Rogue Platinum AWD was how comfortable it remained for the entire trip. Outside of our scheduled stops, I never felt the need to pull over and stretch. The seats remained supportive, the ride quality was smooth, and noise levels were minimal, even at highway speeds.

The ProPILOT Assist 2.1 system added to the relaxed experience, especially on long freeway stretches. Being able to engage hands-free driving on compatible highways meant I could enjoy the scenery while still staying engaged in the drive. Adaptive cruise control and lane centering kept things effortless, even when traffic got unpredictable heading into LA.

Once in the city, stop-and-go traffic was made bearable by ProPILOT’s ability to fully stop and resume when necessary. The steering assist helped in tricky lane merges, while traffic sign recognition kept me aware of ever-changing speed limits.

Safety: Confidence on Every Terrain

The Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite ensured peace of mind across every mile of our journey. Features like blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and rear automatic braking were particularly useful when navigating tight spaces and busy intersections in LA.

Out on the open highway, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection provided extra reassurance, particularly when dealing with unpredictable drivers and sudden traffic slowdowns.

The Driver Attention and Distraction Warning system was another helpful feature—it gently reminded me when I’d been on the road too long, prompting breaks at the perfect moments.
