2025 Mazda CX-70 Turbo Review: The Ideal Blend Of Luxury And Sportiness In A Mid-Size SUV

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 Turbo enhances Mazda’s SUV collection with sophisticated styling, refined performance, and a roomy two-row configuration. Positioned as a midsize SUV just beneath the three-row CX-90, the CX-70 caters to consumers seeking a more upscale experience without the additional seating. However, with pricing and design reminiscent of the CX-90, potential buyers might find the distinctions a bit perplexing.

Mazda has designed the CX-70 Turbo with sleek contours and a modern, polished appearance that could easily be mistaken for a luxury vehicle. The interior features high-quality materials and a sophisticated arrangement, contributing to a premium atmosphere that rivals numerous upscale SUVs. The spaciousness benefits both rows, providing passengers with generous comfort and creating a roomy cabin. The absence of a third row allows the CX-70 to optimize cargo capacity, offering significant space for road trips or everyday errands, making it a suitable two-row option for those who value storage versatility.

Performance is another standout aspect, featuring a 3.3-liter inline-six engine that yields 280 horsepower in the standard model and an impressive 340 horsepower in the S trim. This power boost allows the CX-70 to exhibit agility and responsiveness, and paired with Mazda’s celebrated driving dynamics, it delivers an engaging experience characterized by excellent steering feedback and a sporty demeanor that distinguishes it from other midsize SUVs. Although the engine performs remarkably well, the eight-speed automatic transmission may benefit from enhancements, as it occasionally hesitates during gear selection.

For those seeking greater fuel efficiency, a plug-in hybrid powertrain is also available for the CX-70, offering an electric range of 26 miles.

Despite the many strengths of the CX-70 Turbo, the infotainment system may take some getting used to. Mazda has chosen a rotary dial as the main control interface, which may feel less user-friendly compared to a complete touchscreen system. While the screen supports touchscreen capabilities for Apple CarPlay, the dial can appear somewhat unnecessary.

The model’s positioning within Mazda’s lineup may also prompt inquiries. With its pricing closely aligning with the CX-90, the CX-70 essentially feels like a two-row edition of its three-row counterpart. The starting price for the CX-70 is $41,900, which is more than the CX-90’s base price of $39,300. The reason for the CX-70’s higher entry price is that its base Select trim is not available on the CX-90.

Possibly, the removal of the third row could have been introduced as a trim level within the CX-90 rather than as an entirely distinct model. Given that the CX-90’s third row can fold flat when not in use, the distinction of the CX-70 may not feel significant enough to some buyers. When comparing the Preferred trim levels, the CX-70 is only $500 less expensive than the CX-90.

Ultimately, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 Turbo represents a strong choice for those who prioritize luxury, sporty handling, and ample cargo space over additional seating capacity. While it remains unclear why Mazda decided to position the CX-70 so closely to the CX-90, it undoubtedly appeals to consumers seeking a luxury SUV experience without the need for three rows of seating.
