2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Premium Plus Review

2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Premium Plus

Mazda’s CX-50 has always leaned more rugged and athletic than the typical compact crossover. For 2025, the Hybrid Premium Plus takes that personality and adds real efficiency without watering it down.

This model year feels more mature and more masculine than previous CX-50s I’ve driven. The stance is confident, the details feel intentional, and overall it looks sportier and more planted. Mazda isn’t chasing trends here — they’re refining their direction. And it shows.

Exterior

The CX-50 Hybrid keeps the wide, low stance that makes it feel more grounded than many competitors. The sculpted fenders and tight body lines give it a slightly aggressive edge without becoming flashy.

The Premium Plus trim stands out with its unique 19-inch turbine-inspired wheels finished in a split black and machine-polished design. Bright roof rails and subtle hybrid-specific cues distinguish it from the standard gasoline models, but Mazda avoids unnecessary badging or gimmicks.

It looks capable. It looks deliberate. And compared to earlier model years, this version feels sharper and more resolved.

Interior and Comfort

Step inside and the CX-50 Hybrid Premium Plus feels immediately upscale.

The interior is striking without being busy. Mazda continues to excel at restraint. Materials feel thoughtfully chosen, and the black leather with available camel stitching adds just enough contrast to elevate the cabin.

This model feels roomier than past CX-50s. Passenger space is comfortable front and rear, and Mazda has done a smart job packaging the hybrid battery without compromising usable cargo space.

Premium Plus features include ventilated front seats, a six-way power passenger seat, two-position driver memory, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, and a full-color Active Driving Display projected onto the windshield. The panoramic moonroof adds openness without making the cabin feel exposed.

The Bose 12-speaker audio system delivers clear, balanced sound, and overall noise insulation is well controlled. It’s quiet enough to feel refined, but not so isolated that you lose connection to the road.

Engine and Hybrid System

The CX-50 Hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with the Toyota Hybrid System. It uses three electric motors, an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT), and standard Electric All-Wheel Drive.

Total system output is 219 horsepower, and fuel economy is rated at 38 MPG combined — a significant improvement over the standard 2.5 S models.

On paper, it’s efficient. On the road, it feels composed.

Mazda engineers clearly tuned the throttle response and steering to maintain their signature driving character. While you can still tell it’s a hybrid system, it doesn’t feel disconnected or dull.

Driving Experience

This is where the CX-50 Hybrid separates itself from many compact hybrid crossovers.

Steering is direct and weighted properly. It doesn’t feel vague or overly boosted. The chassis feels tight, and body roll is well controlled.

Ride quality is comfortable without becoming soft. It absorbs imperfections well, but there’s still feedback — the kind that reminds you this is a Mazda.

Acceleration is smooth and adequate. It’s not quick like the Turbo models, and it doesn’t pretend to be. But for daily driving, commuting, and weekend travel, it has more than enough power while delivering strong efficiency.

It feels balanced. That’s the best word for it.

Safety and Technology

The CX-50 Hybrid Premium Plus includes Mazda’s full suite of advanced driver assistance systems: Smart Brake Support, Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Keep Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Driver Attention Alert, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go.

The Active Driving Display is crisp and useful, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are integrated cleanly through the 10.25-inch display.

Technology here feels supportive rather than intrusive.

Conclusion

The 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Premium Plus starts at $40,250.

It’s ideal for drivers who:

• Want hybrid efficiency without sacrificing driving feel
• Prefer a more rugged, athletic design over soft crossover styling
• Need standard AWD but don’t want the fuel economy penalty
• Appreciate high-quality interiors without stepping into luxury pricing

This isn’t the CX-50 for someone chasing maximum performance — that’s what the Turbo is for. And it’s not the cheapest hybrid crossover on the market.

But for someone who values balance — efficiency, design, refinement, and driving dynamics — the CX-50 Hybrid Premium Plus makes a compelling case.
