2024 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro Review: Timeless Performance In A Classic SUV

The 2024 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro hasn’t undergone a redesign in more than ten years, yet it continues to perform well in the market. Fortunately for fans, Toyota has introduced a completely new 4Runner for the 2025 model year. As this marks the final year for the current generation, there are no major changes for the 2024 4Runner.

For 2024, the 4Runner now comes equipped with a standard blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert, features that were initially available only as options. In line with tradition, the 4Runner TRD Pro showcases a new color choice: Terra. Aside from that, the 4Runner continues into 2024 without any further modifications.

The TRD Pro is powered by a 4.0-liter V6 engine that generates 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. While these figures are commendable, the 4Runner’s speed is not particularly impressive, with acceleration ratings that are merely adequate. The transmission—an outdated five-speed automatic—also contributes to the vehicle feeling out of step with modern competitors that feature 9- and 10-speed transmissions, often leading to it struggling to find the appropriate gear, especially during highway driving.

Fuel economy illustrates another area where the 4Runner’s age is evident, sporting an EPA rating of 16 mpg in the city, 19 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg combined.

On-road performance yields mixed results. The TRD Pro’s suspension, though well-suited for off-road adventures, can make for a jarring ride, while its indistinct steering can undermine confidence on smooth surfaces. Additionally, noticeable body roll and brake dive remain concerns.

Where the 4Runner shines is in off-road conditions. Equipped with Fox 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks, Nitto Terra Grappler tires, a 0.3-inch aluminum skid plate, and boasting 9.6 inches of ground clearance, the TRD Pro is designed to conquer challenging terrains effortlessly. Its multi-terrain select system, offering four different modes, along with a multi-terrain monitor camera system, adds more support when navigating trails—though the camera’s resolution could be improved.

Inside, the cabin of the 4Runner feels rugged and utilitarian, but it lacks the modern appeal of newer SUVs. The prevalent use of hard plastics and a straightforward dashboard with oversized buttons and knobs feels outdated. Additionally, the 4.2-inch digital display in the gauge cluster appears nearly archaic. The infotainment system, while operational, also exhibits signs of age; however, the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto does help to modernize the experience somewhat.

With a starting price of $56,620, the interior of the 4Runner TRD Pro could benefit from more contemporary design elements, particularly when compared to competitors like the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler, both of which present more updated interiors.

Ultimately, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro maintains a tough aesthetic and demonstrates remarkable off-road capabilities. However, on paved roads, it reveals its age, lacking the refinement present in newer rivals. Regardless, the 4Runner’s rugged charm and competence render it an appealing choice for those seeking an SUV capable of both everyday driving and serious off-road experiences.
