2024 Lexus GX 550 Luxury Review

2024 Lexus GX 550 Luxury

When I first saw the redesigned 2024 Lexus GX 550 Luxury+, the wheels caught my attention immediately. The 22-inch alloys fill out the squared-off stance perfectly, and paired with the tough, boxy redesign, this new-generation GX makes a statement before you even open the door. It looks rugged — intentionally so — but Lexus poured just the right amount of luxury over the top.

Knowing we had family plans lined up for both a day trip and a night out around town, I was genuinely excited to spend the week with it. The GX has always had a reputation for durability, but this new 550 feels like Lexus decided to elevate everything while keeping that indestructible DNA intact.

Exterior

Finished in Incognito, the GX 550 Luxury+ leans into its bold, upright proportions. The new design feels more purposeful than the outgoing generation. The triple-beam LED headlights and wide grille give it a commanding presence, and the squared profile reinforces that this is still a true body-on-frame SUV.

The 22-inch alloy wheels stand out immediately and give the GX a premium, planted look. Power retractable running boards make entry easy despite the SUV’s height, and roof rail cross bars add practicality for weekend gear.

There’s a sense of confidence in the design. It doesn’t look fragile or over-styled. Instead, it feels solid and capable — like it could handle a mountain trail in the morning and valet parking that same evening without missing a beat.

Interior and Comfort

Step inside, and you immediately see the effort Lexus put into making this a flagship SUV.

The GX 550 Luxury+ features semi-aniline leather-trimmed heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row captain’s chairs, and a panoramic glass roof that opens up the cabin beautifully. Materials feel substantial and thoughtfully assembled. Nothing feels cheap or rushed.

The 14-inch touchscreen with Lexus Interface is clean and intuitive, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration keep connectivity seamless. The Mark Levinson premium audio system delivers rich, clear sound throughout the cabin.

What stood out most, though, was how my family reacted. Everyone commented on how safe and comfortable they felt. There’s generous legroom and headroom, and climate controls and tech features are easily accessible. Rear passengers didn’t feel like an afterthought — they felt prioritized.

It’s rare to hear unanimous praise from family members in a vehicle review week, but the GX earned it.

Engine and Transmission

Power comes from a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 producing 349 horsepower, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and full-time 4WD.

The power delivery feels strong and smooth. The 10-speed automatic shifts confidently and keeps the engine in its sweet spot without feeling busy or aggressive. Whether merging onto the highway or climbing elevation on a day trip, the GX responds with confidence.

Fuel economy is rated at 15 MPG in the city, 21 MPG on the highway, and 17 MPG combined — right in line for a body-on-frame luxury SUV with standard full-time four-wheel drive.

Driving Experience

On the road, the GX 550 feels composed and solid. There’s a reassuring weight to it — not heavy in a sluggish way, but substantial in a way that builds confidence.

The suspension absorbs road imperfections well, maintaining a comfortable ride for both driver and passengers. Steering is predictable and easy to manage, and visibility from the upright seating position reinforces that commanding SUV feel.

It’s the kind of vehicle that makes you feel secure behind the wheel. My family repeatedly mentioned how safe they felt riding in it, and that speaks volumes.

A close friend of mine back east — one of the best mechanics I know — has always praised Lexus and Toyota products for being nearly indestructible and lasting forever. After a week in the GX 550, that reputation feels well-earned. It drives like something engineered for the long haul.

Safety and Technology

The GX 550 Luxury+ comes equipped with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, including Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Pre-Collision System with pedestrian detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist.

Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Intuitive Parking Assist with Auto-Braking enhance everyday usability. Traffic Jam Assist and a head-up display further support modern driving needs.

Combined with its robust construction and advanced driver assistance features, the GX feels thoroughly prepared for family life.

Conclusion and Pricing

The 2024 Lexus GX 550 Luxury+ starts at $79,900. With installed options bringing the MSRP to $83,135 and a $1,350 delivery, processing, and handling fee, the total vehicle price comes to $84,485.

For that investment, you’re getting a fully redesigned luxury SUV with a 349-horsepower twin-turbo V6, full-time 4WD, 22-inch wheels, Mark Levinson audio, heated and ventilated seating, advanced safety systems, and genuine body-on-frame durability.

If you want something that feels exceptionally well built, offers real luxury and comfort, and carries a reputation for lasting the long haul, the GX 550 Luxury+ absolutely deserves to be on your watch list.

It’s confident, capable, and refined — and it backs that up with substance.
