2024 Acura MDX Type S Review, A Great Combination of Luxury and Sport

Acura continues to improve the driving experience of its models with the expansion of its Type S lineup. The Type S lineup was restarted with the arrival of the TLX Type S, followed by MDX Type S, and most recently the Integra Type S.

Acura’s Type S editions offer a touch more sportiness under the hood without compromising on comfort, unlike more aggressive counterparts like BMW’s M series or Mercedes-AMG models.

The standard MDX has a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6, but the Type S variant comes with a thrilling turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, shared with the TLX Type S, which produces 355 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 354 pound-feet of torque at an impressively low 1,400 rpm.

The turbocharged V6 is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It offers 40% quicker downshifts and 30% quicker upshifts, but may occasionally delay in finding the ideal gear.

The MDX Type S has slightly reduced fuel efficiency compared to the standard version, with ratings of 17 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.

One significant advantage of opting for the MDX Type S is the inclusion of a standard air suspension, integrated into an Acura model for the first time, coupled with adaptive dampers, which provides increased agility compared to the standard MDX, without compromising comfort.

Standard on the Type S is Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive system, providing not only front-to-rear power distribution but also side-to-side. This AWD system instills confidence in handling, although the steering might feel a tad light.

The interior of the MDX Type S closely resembles that of the standard version, featuring a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and infotainment screen. The infotainment system’s touchpad operation might detract from ease of use compared to a simple touchscreen.

The MDX Type S exudes luxury, with its soft leather-clad seats and available massaging front seats, offering comfort during long drives or relaxation. The 2024 MDX Type S is available with or without the Advance package, starting at $69,345, or $74,695 with the Advanced package.

In conclusion, the 2024 Acura MDX Type S skillfully balances comfort and sportiness, offering a near-perfect blend of features.
