2022 Lexus IS F Sport Performance Review: Incredible Speed, Strong Engine, and Enhanced Cabin Comfort

Lexus has introduced the IS 500 F Performance, which aims to offer a high-performance experience in the compact sedan segment, while not being a direct successor to the IS F.

Similar to its predecessor, the IS 500 F Sport Performance is equipped with a 5.0-liter V8 engine, producing 472 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque. This power is delivered to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Due to the non-turbocharged nature of the engine, the IS 500 requires some aggressive driving to unleash its full potential. It accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds when pushed to its limits.

Although the IS 500 shares the same V8 engine as the previous IS F, its driving dynamics lean more towards comfort rather than all-out performance, setting it apart from rivals like the BMW M3 or Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing.

The suspension with adaptive dampers offers a smooth ride, but the soft setup results in noticeable body roll during cornering. The steering lacks feedback, impacting confidence during spirited driving. Additionally, the brakes may struggle during intense track use.

The IS 500 represents a significant improvement over the V6-powered IS 350, yet it falls short of being a hardcore sports sedan, focusing more on comfort.

2022 Lexus IS F Sport Performance Review

While the exterior styling of the IS 500 has garnered praise, the interior updates are minimal. The outdated 10.3-inch touchscreen and old infotainment system stand out, despite the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The interior lacks significant differentiation from lower IS models, with the only noticeable changes being sportier front seats and distinctive wheels and exhaust tips on the IS 500.

Although the IS 500 falls short of direct competition with models like the BMW M3, its V8 engine offers a unique driving experience. However, for a true high-performance sedan, rivals with better suspension, all-wheel drive, and more advanced braking systems may be preferred.

2022 Lexus IS F Sport Performance Review

The IS 500 comes at a relatively accessible price of $58,425, making it a more cost-effective option compared to some of its pricier competitors.

Lexus has hinted at further expanding its sport-oriented lineup, leaving room for potential future iterations like an IS F. The future holds exciting possibilities.
