The Toyota Corolla has long been synonymous with reliability and value in the compact sedan segment. Expanding its lineup, Toyota introduces the Corolla Cross into the mix, alongside the sedan and hatchback models. In response to the growing demand for crossovers and SUVs among car buyers, Toyota’s decision to include a crossover variant of the Corolla seems fitting.
The 2022 Corolla Cross retains the attributes that have made its sedan and hatchback counterparts popular, while offering a higher ride height, increased interior space, and more cargo room, making it the most practical option in the lineup.
Compared to previous Corolla models, today’s Corolla family boasts a more modern design, although it may still lack flair. The Corolla Cross follows suit with its conservative styling reminiscent of the smaller C-HR. While its sculpted body adds a touch of appeal, those seeking a more dynamic or stylish look may find it somewhat underwhelming.
Inside, the Corolla Cross mirrors the minimalist design of the Corolla sedan. While the layout is functional, the overall design may come across as rather basic. The dated digital gauge cluster and the older-generation infotainment system contribute to this impression. In contrast, one of its main competitors, the 2023 Honda HR-V, offers a more upscale interior feel.
One downside of the interior is the limited rear legroom. With two average-sized passengers in the back, those in the front may find themselves getting uncomfortably close. With 32.0 inches of rear legroom, taller passengers might not be won over, although it does offer more space than the hatchback. Storage options are also lacking, with a narrow center console up front and 25.5 cubic feet of cargo space in the rear for the FWD version and 24.3 for AWD.
For the 2022 model year, the Corolla Cross comes equipped with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine paired with a CVT, producing 169 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. The engine might feel sluggish during city driving and merging onto highways can be a challenge. However, Toyota plans to introduce a more powerful hybrid powertrain for the 2023 Corolla Cross.
Fuel efficiency is decent, with the FWD version achieving 31 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined, while the AWD version slightly trails at 29/32/30 mpg.
Handling is commendable, with minimal body roll, although the steering lacks the feedback desired for spirited driving. If you seek a more engaging driving experience, alternatives like the Mazda CX-30 might be more appealing.
Available in L, LE, and XLE trims, the 2022 Corolla Cross starts at $23,780, with the fully loaded AWD XLE priced at $29,210.

However, for those seeking a more exciting driving experience or standout design, the Corolla Cross may not be the top choice.
