One of the best things about the human spirit is that it ensures that human beings never run out of ideas. Never.
Just when you think you have seen it all, one or two amazing ideas pop up and before you know it, you are facing one of the most indomitable products in your lifetime. This 1958 Land Rover was built by a man named James A. Cuthbertson of Biggar in Lanarkshire, Scotland.
In his hey day, Cuthberson was well know for works such as these. In particular, it is estimated that only about 20 of these formidable hardcore off-roaders were built.
This one comes front the 1958 production year. This restored example is in remarkably good condition, and it’s very likely either the best or one of the best anywhere in the world today.
Bonhams are estimating its value at between $64,000 and $74,000. Analysts argue that this is quite reasonable a vehicle that’ll steal the show at any car show and help you roll the legacy on.
But it might be Cuthbertson’s venture into this realm that is interesting to enthusiast. Cuthbertson started his own company in 1936 to manufacture his inventions.
He went ahead to design the first endless rubber belt, created rubber tracks for military vehicles (in place of the usual steel), consulted with the governments of Britain, Canada, and the USA, and worked on an underwater pipeline from England to France to supply Allied vehicles after D-Day. It is therefore befitting that this 1958 truck honors the work of a man who contributed so much into shaping off road driving for the modern driver.
