He continued, “All will be in place: an unstoppable design squad, a world-class dynamics team, a next-level powertrain program, a volume crossover SUV, a moonshot supercar, a trusting financial footing, and most of all, a line of cars that compete fiercely at the highest levels of super-luxury-cardom. The carmaker is this close.” There would almost be no need to add anything else. These words capture the aspirations of the Aston Martin, winding up by wishing the car maker a bright, prosperous future.But let’s just poke a little further.
Among brands from David Brown’s stable whose bright future is captured in these words is the 2019 DBS Superleggera. Firstly, the name captures what this brief car aspires to be; Leggera is Italian for “light.” It therefore directly translates to super light. An effort to make it super light is seen in its use of carbon fiber found of the spoiler, splitter and decklid.
All of this carbon fiber helping to lose in total 154 pounds, and with that the DBS achieves its mission to be light. Attaining a top speed of 211 mph t, an imposing front splitter produces 132 pounds of downforce. The latest version of Aston’s Aeroblade airflow system, plus a fixed lip spoiler, give the rear axle a cool 265 pounds, all with little-added drag over the DB11. And then it rides on a V-12 delivering 715 horsepower, making it a respectable performer in its category.
The man behind this project is Matt Becker who is the overall chief engineer for the company. His 26 years experience at Lotus comes in handy. He has been at Aston Martin since 2015.Becker compares the DBS Superleggera to the DB11 AMR noting thus, “It’s the same turbos. It’s the same everything, we’ve just released the full potential of the engine.”
And with a car whose full potential is depended upon to deliver not just speed but also a change in fortune in terms of revenue, we can expect a huge change in the matrix.
