The Genesis GV60 is a brand-new, all-electric compact luxury SUV introduced in 2023. It competes with popular models like the Tesla Model Y, Volvo XC40/C40, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Kia EV6. The GV60 stands out with its user-friendly technology and luxurious features.
The exterior design of the GV60 combines traditional SUV elements with unique Genesis styling, compactly packaged. Its profile features short overhangs at the front and rear, a quickly curving rear window at the C pillar, and distinct parallel lines in the headlights and taillights. The lower grille has a subtle pentagon shape consistent with the brand’s lineup. The gray cladding at the bottom is a standard feature on all models, something to consider when choosing an exterior color.
The performance of the GV60 is impressive, offering robust acceleration and ample power thanks to its standard dual-motor AWD configuration. The Performance version of the GV60 feels even quicker than its claimed 0-60 mph time of 4.0 seconds. The Advanced models are also expected to deliver sufficient power, building on the dual-motor powertrain technology tested in the Ioniq 5 and EV6.
The Performance models feature a “BOOST” button on the steering wheel that provides an extra 54 hp for 10-second intervals. Despite claims of a limit on activation times for component cooling, it proved responsive even after multiple uses on a hot day. This boost enhances power delivery, especially during highway merging or spirited driving on winding roads.
However, the GV60 falls slightly short in terms of suspension performance, surprising given its active suspension system with a road-reading camera borrowed from the larger GV70. The GV60 offers multiple regenerative braking settings, including a one-pedal mode, all seamlessly transitioning between regenerative and traditional braking with consistent pedal feel.
In terms of range, the GV60 offers up to 248 miles, with the Advanced model reaching 248 miles on a single charge and the Performance close behind at 235 miles. While competitive, it falls slightly behind segment leaders like the Ioniq 5 and EV6, offering 256 and 274 miles of range, respectively, with the same AWD/battery pack setup. The slightly lower range of the GV60 can be attributed partially to its weight, around 200 pounds heavier than its Korean counterparts despite its smaller size.
In terms of efficiency, the GV60 averages 2.8 miles per kWh in the Advanced model and 2.7 miles per kWh in the Performance model. Genesis provides three years of 30-minute complimentary charging sessions through Electrify America, leveraging the GV60’s 800-volt architecture for quick charging up to 250 kW, enabling a 10% to 80% charge in just 18 minutes when using suitable fast chargers.
Safety-wise, the GV60 has not yet undergone crash testing by the IIHS or NHTSA, but it boasts an extensive standard safety feature set seldom seen in luxury vehicles. In addition to common features like automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitors, the GV60 includes extras such as a surround-view camera system, head-up display, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot display showing live camera feed, automatic high beams, and automatic wipers, all standard.
The interior of the GV60 is well-designed and ergonomic, featuring a circular theme in controls, vents, and cabin layout. Despite its small size, the GV60 offers ample passenger room in both rows, with good legroom and cargo space for its class. The consistent high-quality cabin materials and luxurious features like nappa leather upholstery in Performance models enhance the overall comfort and appeal of the interior space.
In terms of technology, the Advanced model priced at $59,985 offers a robust set of features, including facial recognition and a fingerprint scanner for keyless start, dual 12.3-inch screens for instrument cluster and infotainment, and luxury amenities like heated and cooled front seats, a premium sound system, and a host of driver-assist technologies. The Performance model, costing $68,985, enhances power delivery, adds premium features like nappa leather upholstery, heated rear seats, and a massaging driver’s seat, along with the latest in facial recognition and fingerprint technology for convenient access.
