For a remarkable eighty years, the Volkswagen Beetle has captured hearts around the globe, leaving an indelible mark as one of the most iconic cars ever created.
Regardless of age, the Beetle has been adored by many, creating a lasting presence in the market. However, production of this beloved vehicle has ceased, making way for a new model to take its place.
The successor to the Volkswagen Beetle is said to be the VW Tarek, according to statements made by VW Mexico CEO, Steffen Reiche in an interview with a tabloid. This information has been widely reported across various media outlets.
Reiche mentioned that the Tarek will be based on a Chinese model called the Tharu. He explained, “We’ll adapt the Chinese model for this market. Our version will be the stronger, more rugged variant compared to the Chinese model.”
Considering the powertrains available in the Tharu, it is anticipated that the VW Tarek will offer a range of engine options. The Tharu comes with engines like a 1.2-liter gas engine producing 116 hp, a 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder generating 150 hp, and a 2.0-liter turbo engine delivering 186 hp. All these engines are paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that powers the front wheels.
It remains to be seen whether VW will introduce these engine options to the North American market. However, there is a common sentiment that while the Beetle has left a lasting legacy, the time may have come for it to step aside, preserving its high-standing reputation in the automotive world.
