Inside The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby

The new 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 made its debut at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. Despite unveiling many exciting engineering details, Ford has kept much of the information under wraps.

One key detail to note is that the Mustang will boast 700 horsepower from a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine, a continuation of the GT350’s naturally aspirated 5.2 engine platform.

Unlike its predecessors, which focused primarily on straight-line speed, the latest Shelby is designed to offer a well-rounded performance experience. Ford claims the muscle car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in the mid-three-second range and complete a quarter mile in under 11 seconds.

Ford Performance manager Jim Owens highlighted, “It’s not only the fastest Mustang we’ve ever made in a straight line but also excels in handling. It will deliver impressive drag strip performance right off the lot, achieving sub-11-second quarter-mile times, and will also outperform any production Mustang on a road course.”

The GT500 will be available in two main configurations catering to different preferences. The base-model GT500 is geared towards straight-line speed, while models equipped with the “Carbon Fiber Handling Package” are optimized for track performance.

This specialized package features 20-inch carbon-fiber wheels (one inch larger than those on the GT350R but equally lightweight), a prominent GT4-inspired carbon-fiber wing, a front chin splitter, and rear seat deletion.

Despite intense competition in this segment, Ford’s bold move to dive headfirst into the mix injects even more excitement into this highly competitive space.
