The Hyundai Kona lineup now includes the sporty N-Line and N models, enhancing the overall driving experience. This small crossover competes with rivals like the Kia Seltos, Honda HR-V, and Subaru Crosstrek, offering a range of models from the high-performance Kona N to the budget-friendly Kona. The Kona stands out for its advanced features, technology, value, and safety ratings.

In 2022, the Kona underwent significant changes, including a redesign of existing models and the introduction of two performance-focused variants, the Kona N-Line and Kona N. Additionally, there is an electric version of the Kona available, which is reviewed separately.

The redesigned Kona maintains its distinctive upright appearance but features updated details. The exterior enhancements include beefed-up black cladding, a widened grille, and faux skid-plate designs on the front and rear bumpers. The sportier N-Line model replaces cladding with body-colored panels, while the Kona N boasts a double-wing roof spoiler, 19-inch alloy wheels, and larger intakes for its turbocharged engine.

The turbocharged engines in the Kona deliver a thrilling driving experience. The base engine now comes with a continuous variable automatic transmission (CVT), while turbocharged options offer a significant power boost. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard across all models, with all-wheel drive (AWD) available on most trims except the Kona N.

The SE and SEL models retain the 147-hp 2.0-liter inline-4 engine, paired with a CVT for improved performance. The N-Line and Limited trims feature a 1.6-liter turbo-4 engine with a power increase to 195-hp for 2022. The Kona N, Hyundai’s high-performance model, stands out with a 276-hp 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine and advanced features like an electronic limited slip differential and adjustable dampers.

Fuel efficiency is best in the FWD models, with the base engine delivering 30 mpg city, 35 highway, 32 combined. Safety is a key strength of the Kona, with top ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS. All models come equipped with automatic emergency braking and active lane control, with additional safety features available on higher trims.

Inside, the Kona boasts a well-designed interior with updated infotainment screens and stylish air vents. The front seats offer good support and adjustability, while the rear seats provide ample headroom. Cargo space is generous with the backseat folded down, and overall value is highlighted by the Kona’s feature-packed trims and warranty coverage.

Pricing starts at $22,545 for the base SE trim, with higher trims offering additional features like heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, and leather upholstery. The Kona N stands out as the most expensive but also the most fun model in the lineup, with a focus on performance and driving dynamics.

In conclusion, the 2022 Hyundai Kona combines a contemporary design with advanced technology and safety features, making it a compelling option in the small crossover segment.
