Honda Civic Type R Review: A Strong Sedan With Excellent Features

For many years, Honda has sold the Civic Type R in various markets before introducing it to the U.S. with the last-generation Civic. The previous model was a bold and high-performance hot hatch that offered style and practicality. Now, the 2023 Civic Type R has been redesigned to enhance the success of its predecessor and address some of its shortcomings.

One of the main drawbacks of the previous Civic Type R was its overly flashy design, which could be off-putting to some. The 2023 model has toned down its appearance to be more refined and mature, retaining a premium look while appearing more grounded on the road due to its increased dimensions.

Inside, the cabin of the Civic Type R feels more upscale with improved materials and a better layout. The front sport seats offer great support and comfort for everyday driving, although the rear seats may not match the same level of quality. Unique features include a thicker steering wheel, an aluminum shifter, and metal accents on the center console.

The driver faces a distinctive digital gauge cluster that adjusts based on the selected drive mode, with a LED shift light in the sportiest mode to guide gear changes optimally. The dashboard features a 9-inch infotainment system with a Performance Monitor showing real-time performance data such as a g-meter and lap timer.

Regarding performance, the 2023 Civic Type R is equipped with the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine as its predecessor but now delivers 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, representing an increase in power. The engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission that offers quick shifts thanks to automatic rev matching. While some turbo lag may be noticeable at lower revs, the engine demonstrates a broad powerband above 2,000 rpm. The driving experience is exhilarating, although some might find the engine’s sound a bit lacking compared to competitors like the Toyota GR Corolla.

Improvements have also been made to the chassis of the new Civic Type R, enhancing its agility on the track. The steering is more responsive with better feedback, and the suspension has been adjusted for improved handling. Switching to +R mode tightens the suspension for a sportier driving experience, making the Type R a joy to drive enthusiastically.

Braking performance is impressive thanks to four-piston Brembo calipers and 13.8-inch front rotors, complemented by Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires providing ample grip. Despite its powerful front-wheel-drive setup, torque steer is minimal. The Civic Type R stands out as one of the best front-wheel-drive vehicles available.

The introduction of competitors like the Hyundai Elantra N and Toyota GR Corolla has increased the variety of options in the segment. While the Elantra N offers versatility and the GR Corolla provides all-wheel drive, the Civic Type R shines with its combination of performance and practicality.

In terms of pricing, the 2023 Honda Civic Type R starts at $44,390, positioning it above the GR Corolla in terms of standard features and interior quality. The Type R’s upscale interior and additional equipment justify its price point for enthusiasts seeking a well-rounded sports car.

Overall, the 2023 Honda Civic Type R excels as a sports car that also meets practical needs with its seating capacity and cargo space. For driving enthusiasts looking for a versatile yet thrilling experience, the Civic Type R is a top choice.
