Rolls-Royce created a remarkable luxury car known as the Silver Cloud between 1955 and 1966, following the lineage of names like Silver Dawn and preceding the Silver Shadow. The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II set a high standard for luxury during its time, solidifying the company’s reputation in the luxury car market.
Weighing nearly two tons, the Silver Cloud featured a 155 hp six-cylinder engine paired with a four-speed automatic gearbox as its standard. It was a sizable car, measuring 5.38 m (212 in) in length and 1.90 m (75 in) in width, distinguishing itself in the luxury car segment.
After a few years, a significant update was made to the car, incorporating a powerful 6.23-liter V8 engine. This upgrade was particularly notable as this engine is still used in modern Rolls-Royce cars with various enhancements. The car was rebranded as the Silver Cloud II to reflect these enhancements, while the bodywork remained largely unchanged. The Silver Cloud II was a huge success for the company, leading to the creation of the timeless slogan from David Ogilvy’s advertising firm: “At 60 mph the loudest noise in this new Rolls-Royce comes from the electric clock.”
