When considering recent options from Mitsubishi, the launch of the new Outlander shows that the company is still active and ready to compete with other brands. The new Outlander brings noticeable improvements, partially thanks to Mitsubishi’s collaboration with Nissan. The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV offers a plug-in hybrid option that caters to families looking for some electric vehicle capabilities without breaking the bank.
The previous generation Outlander PHEV was among the first non-luxury plug-in hybrid crossovers, but now faces stiff competition from models like the Ford Escape PHEV and Toyota RAV4 Prime. One key advantage of the Outlander PHEV is its inclusion of three rows of seats, compared to its competitors that offer only two rows. This feature makes the Outlander PHEV more appealing to families requiring additional seating, although the third row might be tight on space.
Mitsubishi has made significant powertrain updates to the Outlander PHEV, including a larger 20 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, front electric motor producing 114 hp, rear motor generating 134 hp, and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine pushing 131 hp. In total, the plug-in hybrid system delivers 249 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, slightly less powerful than the RAV4 Prime. The Outlander PHEV offers a 38-mile electric range and a total driving range of 420 miles, outperforming some competitors in this aspect.
On the road, the Outlander PHEV performs well, providing ample power for family transportation. While the RAV4 may have quicker acceleration, the Outlander PHEV is no slouch. The all-wheel-drive system powered by the electric motors enhances traction. Different EV modes cater to various driving scenarios, including prioritizing electric power, maintaining battery charge, and using the gas engine for charging.
Charging the Outlander PHEV’s battery from 0-80% takes only 38 minutes with a DC fast charger, and 6.5 hours with a 240-volt charger. This model supports DC fast charging, a feature lacking in some competitors. The regenerative braking system aids in slowing down the vehicle, and the Outlander PHEV can tow up to 1,500 pounds.
Featuring seven drive modes accessible through the center console, the Outlander PHEV closely resembles the gas version in design. The interior boasts upscale elements, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and a 9-inch touchscreen display. Safety features include lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.
Starting at $41,190 including destination charge, the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV presents an attractive option for families seeking a practical plug-in hybrid solution. With its spacious interior, refined powertrain, and reasonable EV range, the Outlander PHEV surpasses its gas-powered counterpart in various aspects.
