Genesis is a new player in the luxury car market and has set an ambitious target where it aims to exclusively sell electric vehicles from the start of 2025. As part of this transition, Genesis has introduced the electric GV60 crossover and is also electrifying its current gasoline-powered lineup, including the 2023 Electrified G80.

The Electrified G80 is essentially based on the traditional G80 but with its internal combustion engine swapped out for an electric powertrain. Equipped with an 800-volt charging system, an 87.2-kilowatt-hour battery pack, and a dual motor setup, the Electrified G80 is no slouch in terms of performance.

The dual motor configuration produces a combined output of 365 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, which is slightly below the V6-powered G80 in horsepower but significantly exceeds it in torque. With a range of 282 miles, the Electrified G80 can be quickly charged from 10% to 80% in just 22 minutes at a 187-kilowatt rate. Additionally, the vehicle features V2L (vehicle-to-load) capabilities, enabling it to function as a 1.9-kilowatt generator for external electric devices.

Driving the Electrified G80 is a pleasant experience due to its ample power and quiet operation. The absence of noise from traditional engines enhances the luxurious feel of the vehicle. With strong midrange power and an impressive acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in under five seconds, the Electrified G80 offers a responsive and agile driving experience, especially thanks to its standard rear-wheel steering system.

Despite being slightly heavier than the G80 Sport, the Electrified G80’s firmer suspension results in a more controlled and comfortable ride, though there is room for improvement in terms of overall damping and body control. The vehicle prioritizes comfort over sportiness, evident in its slightly slower steering response. Users can choose from various regenerative braking levels, including a one-pedal driving mode.

Visually, the Electrified G80 closely resembles its gasoline-powered counterparts, with minor differences such as a sealed front grille concealing the charging port and distinctive 19-inch wheels. The interior features premium materials, including sustainably sourced trim made from recycled materials, providing a luxurious feel. However, some compromises are present, such as a slightly raised seating position and reduced rear headroom due to the battery pack placement. The trunk space is also slightly decreased compared to traditional models.

Inside, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a head-up display in front of the driver, along with a 14.5-inch touchscreen supporting wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, offer modern connectivity features. The vehicle comes with a rotary knob on the center console as an alternative control method to the touchscreen.

Priced starting at $80,920 inclusive of destination charges, the Electrified G80 is competitively priced in the large electric sedan segment compared to models like the Tesla Model S, offering similar luxury at a lower cost. However, the vehicle is currently limited to select states.

In conclusion, the 2023 Genesis Electrified G80 stands out as a luxurious and refined electric sedan, even though it lacks a dedicated electric vehicle platform like the GV60. It successfully maintains the desirable attributes of the G80 lineup while enhancing the overall sedan experience.
