Review of the 2022 Mazda CX-30 Turbo: Elevating the Subcompact Crossover

The Mazda CX-3 has made way for its upgraded successor, the CX-30, in Mazda’s lineup. Among the subcompact crossover options available, the 2022 Mazda CX-30 sets itself apart with its striking exterior, premium interior, and turbocharged engine.

The CX-30 slots in just below the CX-5 in Mazda’s crossover range. If you admire the Mazda3 hatchback but desire a slightly more rugged feel, the CX-30 could be the ideal choice. Resembling a lifted Mazda 3 in many aspects, the CX-30 boasts an additional 2.5 inches of ground clearance and stands 5 inches taller than the hatchback.

Similar to the Mazda3, the CX-30 exudes a luxurious appearance that surpasses its competitors. While some may prefer a version without the black lower trim, this is a minor critique compared to its overall appeal.

Offering a choice between two engines, the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is naturally aspirated, but the more thrilling option is the turbocharged 2.5-liter that truly enhances the driving experience. With 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque on 93 octane fuel (227 hp and 310 lb-ft on 87 octane), the turbo engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive elevates the CX-30’s performance.

The naturally aspirated engine achieves 24 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined, while the turbocharged engine delivers 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined.

For an engaging driving experience, the turbocharged engine is the preferred choice, providing prompt acceleration and ample midrange power. Despite the slightly outdated six-speed automatic transmission, which contrasts with the current trend of eight and nine-speed transmissions, it generally performs well in selecting appropriate gears.

Although the CX-30 may not hug the road as tightly as the Mazda3 due to its higher suspension, it remains enjoyable to drive, striking a balance between comfort and sportiness with controlled body roll, making it suitable for spirited driving on back roads.

Designed for both on-road and light off-road adventures, the CX-30 offers versatility. Inside, Mazda’s signature minimalist design approach is evident with clean lines and premium materials. However, the infotainment system, controlled solely through a rotary dial instead of a touchscreen, might pose a distraction while driving, despite the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

In terms of safety features, standard offerings include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure mitigation, with the Premium Plus trim adding advanced features like a 360-degree camera and rear cross-traffic braking.

Though the interior may feel compact, especially for rear passengers, and cargo space may be limited compared to competitors, priced from $23,775 for the base model and $31,775 for the turbocharged version, the 2022 Mazda CX-30 excels in aesthetics, interior quality, and driving enjoyment within its segment.
