There are many instances in which automakers don’t necessarily make cars for mere consumption by the masses but rather to make a certain impression, to shake or test the market a little and to show another world of possibilities. The Mazda Cosmo was a car made to fulfill such a mission.
The year was 1964 at the Tokyo Motor Show when the Mazda Cosmo Sport was first brought to the eager public. In the year that followed, 1965, sixty pre-productions examples were tested and soon after there were announcements of full production.
This particular Mazda was greatly was heralded for it was the world’s first dual-rotor rotary engine car. In addition, each Cosmos was hand made and therefore only one unit was made per day.
Fast forward to 2019 and things the same car used to pioneer some outstanding technologies has not dropped the legacy. There is now a 2019 concept that has retained two-seater sports car arrangement but added lots of enviable tech-updateD.
Among superb modern novelties is an electric powertrain as found in most modern cars of this stature, a hydrogen-fueled rotary engine that works as a range extender. There is also Level 4 autonomous driving features and 3D facial recognition.
The journey of this Mazda sports car to date is remarkable. With the new updates, we expect to see an extension to its lifespan and awakening of its past glory.
