The current GT will soon enter its 10th year on sale. So far, Mercedes-AMG has kept the car fresh by upgrading it over the years, but is it possible that the German carmaker is considering something big for this grand tourer? Could Mercedes-AMG equip this car with a formidable engine and make it fight with other supercars out there?
2nd-generation Mercedes-AMG GT : More details
The good folks at Affalterbach are planning a second generation of the GT. The car could be named as the Mercedes-AMG GT S E Performance and come with the same powertrain as the one found in the four-door coupe. As expected, this version will likely be the range-topping variant of the GT line-up.
Coming to the powertrain, we are likely to see the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo with an electric motor. There is also a 6.1 kWh battery pack to support the motor. In total, both the engine and the motor will generate a total power of 831 HP and a mind boggling 1,033 lb-ft of torque. All this power means that the Mercedes-AMG GT S E Performance could have a sub 3 second 0-62 mph time. And a respectable sub 10 second time for the 0-124 mph figure. In terms of the top speed, Mercedes is likely to allow this car to reach 196 mph or 316 km/h.
Further, being smaller than the four-door sibling, this should make the GT much faster, and nimble in comparison. Mercedes could equip the same 9-speed automatic gearbox on the GT S E Performance. Along side, the 4Matic+ system which sends power to all the four wheels will be present as well.
Other goodies on the car could include ceramic brakes, an upgraded chassis, better aerodynamic and new colour options to set it apart from the regular GT.
Competition of the Mercedes-AMG GT S E Performance
Mercedes would like to pitch it as a competitor to the Porsche 911 when the car actually goes on sale.
