The Fisker Karma EV Speedster: Revolutionizing the Status Quo

Henrik Fisker has a unique vision for a cutting-edge hybrid sports car and has displayed ingenuity in the realm of purely electric vehicles as well.

While progress in realizing his vision has been slower than expected, Fisker remains resolute with his innovations despite encountering numerous obstacles.

The Fisker Karma, which entered the market in July 2011 and saw approximately 2,500 units sold before production was paused, featured a centrally located battery supplied by the company’s subsidiary, A123 Systems.

The battery’s positioning between the left-hand and right-hand seat pairs allows the car to accommodate four passengers instead of the traditional five.

Should the battery deplete, a 260-hp, 2.0-liter Ecotec four-cylinder direct-injection turbocharged gasoline engine located at the front of the vehicle serves as a generator, supplying power directly to the drive motors. This engine was sourced from General Motors.

Noteworthy is the solar panel roof developed by Asola Advanced and Automotive Solar Systems, an associate of Quantum Technologies, known for its computer chip manufacturing. The solar panel is designed to aid in regulating the cabin’s climate control system.

Although Fisker’s endeavors were ambitious, production was halted in 2012 due to various unforeseen challenges.

Fisker currently has multiple undisclosed vehicle projects in progress, with one slated for release by 2021 after a delay from the initially scheduled 2019 debut. Understanding the fierce competition in the market, Fisker remains optimistic about the future and views setbacks as integral parts of their journey towards success.
